Copy editing

As a copy editor, I prepare text for publication: 

• Improving the formatting, style and accuracy of text.
• Ensuring that copy is clear, correct, concise, comprehensible and consistent.
• Correcting spelling, punctuation, grammar, terminology, jargon and semantics.
• Ensuring that text adheres to the publisher’s/author’s style.
• Suggesting changes to the substance of the text, if necessary.

• Adding headers, footers, pull quotes and artwork numbering, where required.

Proofreading

As a proofreader, I am usually the last person to check text before it goes to print: 

• Reviewing the final draft (proof) of a text before it goes to print.
• Checking that all proof pages are present and correctly numbered.
• Ensuring that all information is accurate.
• Looking for errors or omissions, rather than improving writing style or tone.
• Correcting spelling, punctuation and grammar.
• Checking that page numbers in Contents pages are correct.
• Checking that headings on Contents pages match those in text.
• Checking for correct numbering sequence of figures, tables, footnotes, etc.
• Checking that layout and artwork across pages is comfortable and apparent.
